Kill the dead caches

Cache Hunt

I don't think I'm overstating it to say it is WAY  past time to set up a simple process to archive caches that are long gone.  In the SE Mass and RI area many of the listed caches are dead.  Repeatedly filing requests that the caches be archived has yielded little in the way of results.  It's hard enough getting folks to try Terracaching without explaining that only some of the caches are real and that there is no simple process to eliminate them.  So how about it?

I think it could be this simple:  1, Set up an mail account for the community to submit dead caches  2, Give someone the authority to access the caches.  3,  Email the owner and give then 30 days to confirm that the cache is physically present.  4, Archive the cache when they don't respond.

After the first go around this will take all of five minutes a month to do.

Here are my nominees for immediate action

TCCNH last found 5/1/2009 CO last on website in 2008

TCDVB last found 2010, cache missing,  CO unresponsive to several PM asking about cache status

TCCJQ same as cache above

And shouldn't an archived cache displayed on the map or grid have it's own colored symbol to show it's gone?

I'd be happy to assist in this process, just say the word and set it up/

Why archive when there is the adoption and/or replace the cache. When a CC is involved, TC has been very helpful to me in getting/changing the CC for caches I have replaced.

We need to save quality caches and spend some time enhancing the Web site for those outstanding modifications/enhancements/.... and also encourage introduce new participants

    So, my $.02

Encouraging new participants is part of dexter's point.

A new player opens up a map of caches and looks at a few, sees that many in their area have been missing with a CO that hasn't been on in years. Their interest in TC is soon lost.

A lot of us spent last year doing cache care on our caches, as well as on ones where the owner is MIA. This was supposed to help ensure a viable cache was in place when it came time to hunt it.

I'm familiar with the three caches that dexter mentioned. He and I have posted logs, and sent the CO messages on several occasions to let them know the caches are missing. No response. Nothing.

    Enough is enough. Archive them.
